The Fifth: Toronto’s One-Stop Social Experience Launches Heated Igloos

The Fifth is Toronto Entertainment District’s one-stop-shop for mixing and mingling, with venues for various occasions. Dance the night away at Cabin Five during its “Flashback Fridays”, get dolled up for The Fifth Social Club or sit back for casual bevys and bites at Fifth Pubhouse. Located at the corner of Richmond Street W and Duncan Street, the multiplex destination continues to keep Toronto’s nightlife active – despite the cold weather. In partnership with Heineken, The Fifth brings us its first heated igloo patio experience along their Fifth Pubhouse patio, allowing guests to crack open a cold one while embracing the cold in comfort. These igloos offer an exciting outdoor nightlife experience and are available six days a week (Monday to Saturday) from 5 p.m. onward and are only here for a limited time. We spoke with The Fifth owner Oliver Geddes to learn more about the inspiration behind the Heineken activation and what it means to be situated in the Toronto Entertainment District.

Can you describe #5thXHeinekenIgloo? What inspired you to launch a winter patio?

We have three igloos on our Duncan Street parklet (street patio), the first of their kind in Toronto! Having recently been in Europe, I was inspired by how bars and restaurants use their outdoor spaces year-round and came up with the igloo idea after dining in a hotel in Switzerland that was completely made of ice.

What else is happening at any of The Fifth venues?

At The Fifth Grill & Terrace, we were recently in the midst of a busy and successful Winterlicious. The Pubhouse also has a brand-new menu and the Café and Curated Convenience has a ton of new daily offerings. Cabin Five has started a Retro 90s Party on Fridays. Our newest pop-up venue is now booking parties of all kinds.  There is even an upcoming ‘Carnival’ themed party. Needless to say, there’s always a lot happening under one roof!

What do you love best about setting up shop in the Toronto Entertainment District?

My uncle started his first restaurant at the corner of Simcoe and Nelson in the late 80s, where I worked as a 12-year-old busboy. To see how the neighbourhood has changed is incredible. Back then it was a ghost town. Today it is one of the most dynamic and vibrant neighbourhoods in North America. The BIA and our local councillor continue to make smart, progressive decisions that have and will continue to help shape the area. It’s wild to think there’s still so much more to come.

Can you name a few of your favourite things/places in the area?

There are so many amazing offerings in the Toronto Entertainment District. Some of my favourites include having lunch down the street at PAI, listening to live music at Adelaide Hall’s ‘Radio’ events, having a drink at Parlour, and going to a Leafs or Raptors game at Scotiabank Arena.
