Major City Construction on Adelaide St W (Bathurst St to Parliament St)

Please be advised that City construction work on Adelaide Street is commencing. Construction on the Ontario Line will require a prolonged road closure on Queen Street West (St. James Street to Yonge Street). As a result, the 501 Queen streetcar will be diverted to Adelaide Street (eastbound) and Richmond Street (westbound). In an effort to prepare for the diversion, the City will replace the 100 year old watermain on Adelaide Street (York Street to Victoria Street). At the same time, the ageing streetcar tracks on Adelaide Street (Charlotte Street to York Street) will be replaced (in some sections reinstated) to create additional TTC route diversion in the downtown core.

Traffic Updates: In addition, the City is taking this opportunity to improve safety for road users on Adelaide Street by relocating the existing cycle track from the south side to the north side of the street from Bathurst Street to Parliament Street. The City will also modify traffic signal timing, install new bike signals and pedestrian safety improvements at various locations on the same section of Adelaide Street.

Please note that when the contractor begins construction work in earnest, Adelaide Street will be reduced up to a single eastbound lane from Spadina Avenue to Victoria Street. People driving and cycling will be required to share the travel lane – single file.

Construction Update #9

Portions of the sidewalk will be dug up, impeding pedestrian traffic.

The City’s contractor is nearing completion with Phase 2 track reinstatement, from west of Duncan Street towards Widmer Street.  Current estimates suggest that the contractor will complete this phase by early December.

Since construction work is progressing very well, work on Phase 3 (Widmer Street to Charlotte Street) is expected to start the week of December 5 (next week).

Crews have replaced the watermain from York Street towards Bay Street (Phase 1A), and are now replacing the water service connections on the north side of Adelaide Street. The contractor is in the process of confirming underground utility locates from Victoria Street towards Bay Street before the excavation process begins. From this point, excavation is expected to begin the week of December 12.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding during this time especially with the ongoing traffic delays, noise, dust and vibration associated with this project.
