Adelaide Street Construction and Cycle Track Relocation to North Side (JUNE 2024)

City Staff have provided an update for the Adelaide Street Construction, Cycle Track Relocation.

Engineering & Construction Services (ECS) and Transportation Services (TS) staff have identified an opportunity to begin the relocation of the cycle track from the south to the north side of the street from Bathurst Street to Parliament Street earlier than previously discussed. The previous schedule identified the relocation to occur in spring 2024, however, they can complete most of the relocation this summer.

The relocation will occur along the sections of Adelaide Street where no active construction is taking place. The sections that the City will complete in 2023 are Bathurst Street to York Street and Victoria Street to Parliament Street. The remaining relocation from York Street to Victoria Street will take place in spring 2024 after the TTC track work is complete.

Attached is a copy of the Construction Update Notice.

In 2018, City Council approved the relocation of the cycle track from the south side to the north side of the street from Bathurst Street to Parliament Street. The cycle track relocation from Bathurst Street to York Street is tentatively planned for the week of June 5 and is planned to last approximately 35 working days. Construction will occur block by block from west to east including modifications to the traffic signals. Traffic within this active work zone will be reduced to one lane and on-street parking will not be permitted. The contractor will have the appropriate signage indicating that cyclists are required to share the lane through the active work zone.

The City is currently waiting to receive underground locates. Once received, the installation of TPA parking machines + signs on the south side of the street will be installed. This is currently estimated to happen 2 weeks after the cycle track relocation. While they wait for the locates, there will not be any legal parking as the machines + signs will not be installed. Staff are working to expedite the locate process and reduce this time as much as possible.

Below is the updated sequencing of work:

Scope of work Timing
Underground utility relocation – from Victoria Street to York Street* May to November 2023
Relocation of cycle tracks to the North side – from Bathurst Street to York Street Early June 2023
Relocation of cycle tracks to the North side – from Victoria Street to Parliament Street Mid-July 2023
TTC tracks – from Victoria Street to York Street* August to March 2024
TTC racks – intersection of York Street/Adelaide Street* September to November 2023 (4 week duration) – timing dependent on utility relocation status
Relocation of cycle tracks to the north side – from York Street to Church Street Spring 2024
TTC overhead work March 2024 to June 2024

*Work will occur concurrently between York Street and Victoria Street

ECS is in discussions with the contractor to determine the exact timing/phasing for the relocation. As the schedule become available, the City will share those details with the BIA.
